"Short poetry for Abdul", poet Hamid Barole Abdu

We publish a poem by Eritrean writer and poet Hamid Barole Abdu to remember Abdul Guibre, killed in Milan.

Skinhead boots

Superior race,
in your name
kicks and stones
and broken bones.

My blood is running
from my trembling body
and my life is going

Black man
not a beast
even when they treat you so.

Defenceless man
attacked and knocked about
my brother’s hand
with violence hits me

Cain’s blows
on Abel’s body

Yesterday my heart
was warmed
by mother’s
sweet cares

today a man’s kick
blots out my mind

(Akhria, 1996)
