5th july 2009, ?G8 – DOLOMITES EMBRACE AFRICA
A HUMAN CHAIN SURROUNDING THE THREE LAVAREDO TOPS
MEN AND WOMEN HOLD HANDS FOR AFRICA

BONO VOX supports the initiative: “we have mountains to climb, but thanks to this poetic event,  i t will get easier”

Six thousand people will hold hands and embrace the three Lavaredo Tops, on Dolomites, natural meeting point between Africa and Europe, for reminding to the  “Group of Eight” to keep the promises they‘ve made towards Southern World and Developing Countries during the next 8th of July  in L’Aquila.

“DOLOMITES EMBRACE AFRICA ” will take place on  Sunday the 5th of July a Misurina, promoted by Gruppi “Insieme si può…” NGO and Auronzo di Cadore Municipality, under the aegis of House of Commons, Veneto Region, Belluno Province, Bolzano Province,  Centro Cadore Mountain Community, Dobbiaco Municipality, Cortina D’Ampezzo Municipality.

An event coming from a strong and “poetic”’ idea, as affirmed by Bono Vox , the U2 singer, founder of “DATA” organization (Debt, Aids, Trade in Africa) and who has been fighting since several years for the campaign for Third World Debt Relief.  The Irish rockstar showed his support to the Italian organizators with a message: “I’m thankful to those who work for poors’ equality and justice and to Tatiana (Councillor for Culture, Education and Youth  Policies in Auronzo di Cadore Municipality, editor’s note), who organized this initiative during the Italian summit of G8. We have mountains to climb but thanks to this poetic event, it will get easier”.

The choice of Dolomites Chain includes a strong symbolism. These mountains were born 40 million years ago because of raising forces due to the impact between Africa and Europe’s plates. They may symbolize a natural meeting point created by Mother Earth between the two Continents.

The three Lavaredo Tops represent a natural trinity raising to the sky. While they were considered as the bloody theatre of the Great War, now they become the sign of peace, justice and equality for Africa, the rights requested by those men and women who will hold hands in a symbolic hug between the two Continents. The elevation of the tops to the sky will lead this chorus of hope towards the Infinity.

The three tops may symbolize three of the Aims of Development, which strongly connect the destiny of the two continents:

  • TO ERASE EXTREME POVERTY AND HUNGER
  • TO GUARANTEE   ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY ( including free access to drinking water)
  • TO DEVELOP  WORLDWIDE PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT
