Somalia’s president has visited African Union and government troops in Mogadishu. The visit comes a day after they captured three strategic locations from al-Qaida-linked rebels.

Speaking at a military base in the capital, President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, said government forces and African Union troops fought al-Shabab militants to secure aid routes for drought victims. He appealed for more international aid, saying the government couldn’t feed the overwhelming number of Somalis suffering from famine.

The AU and Somali troops have been conducting a concerted offensive against al-Shabab all year, and have gained much ground in Mogadishu.

But the fight took on a new importance in recent days as tens of thousands of people fleeing the famine filled refugee camps there.
