WHAT TO WATCH NEXT WEEK

Monday October 3

  • South Africa PMI for September. The Purchasing Managers Index rose to 46.7 in August from a two-year low of 44.2 in July (0900 GMT)
  • South African Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan addresses the annual Chamber of Commerce and Industry dinner. He is expected to discuss South Africa’s sluggish economic recovery and government plans to create jobs (1630 GMT)

Tuesday October 4

  • South Africa September new vehicles sales. Growth in new vehicle sales quickened to 11.1 percent year-on-year in August (0900 GMT)

Wednesday October 5

  • Kenya Monetary Policy Committee meeting. The central bank raised its main interest rate by 75 basis points to 7.0 percent at a special meeting in September and maintained its liquidity requirements for commercial banks.
  • Reuters releases its latest monthly Rand poll. The rand took a hammering in September, although many analysts, including central bank governor Gill Marcus, believe it was oversold. (1220 GMT)

Thursday October 6

  • Reuters releases Econometer survey for September. In August, economists cut their growth forecasts for South Africa and forecast that interest rates would remain low for longer than previously anticipated given weak growth (0730 GMT)

Friday October 7

  • South African foreign reserves data for September. Gross reserves rose to $51.449 billion in August (0600 GMT)
