West Africa: Italy send flight after floods

Italy’s foreign ministry has organised yesterday with UN office OCHA an humanitarian flight for Senegal and Burkina Faso populations damaged by recent heavy rains. A press release by Italian foreign office said.

The decision has been taken in partnership with Norway and Ireland and has shipped in these two African countries 40 tons of humanitarian goods such as tents, electrical appliances, water purifiers and more.

Italian contribution amount to 229,000 euro.

Following the recent flooding in Burkina Faso and Senegal, and in response to a request received from OCHA (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) for a humanitarian intervention in favor of the people affected, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in consultation with Norway and Ireland, organized under the auspices of OCHA, a humanitarian flight from Brindisi to the two capitals, Ouagadougou and Dakar.

The flight carrying humanitarian goods for a total of about 40 tonnes including: tents, electric generators, water purifiers, blankets and cooking kits.

The contribution of the Italian Cooperation consists of about 229,000 Euros, of which about 144,000 for the share of materials (about 17 tons) and the remaining 85.000 Euro as the share of the cost of the flight.

The humanitarian goods will be transported by a comercial cargo in the early morning of Tuesday 15 September in the city of Dakar (Senegal) and in the afternoon the same day in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).

The assets will be taken over by United Nations representatives in their respective countries that will take care of further distribution agreement with the local authorities.
