South Africa tables anti-racism resolution

International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane tabled a resolution on “anti-racism in sport” at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva yesterday.

The resolution was endorsed by the African group of nations on the council and Brazil.

“This … comes at an opportune time when South Africa will be hosting the 2010 Fifa World Cup in the next three months and it will also use this as an opportunity to call on the world to abolish racism and all its vestiges across all the sporting codes,” the Department of International Relations and Co-operation said yesterday.

The minister addressed the High Level Segment of the 13th Session of the Human Rights Council (UNHRC) which began yesterday.

The resolution against racism in sport which Nkoana-Mashabane delivered will be part of a more extensive package presented by the African Group, her department said.
