They are the best rugby side in the southern hemisphere and they have the trophies to prove it, and after giving up their cathedral, Loftus Versfeld, the Bulls went a step further when they swopped their hallowed sky blue jerseys for the Green and Gold Bafana Bafana jersey yesterday.
Bulls captain Victor Matfield and the rest of the Bulls Super 14 squad became the first domestic rugby team to pledge their support for the national soccer team as they donned their Bafana Bafana jerseys on their way to the airport to board a flight to Perth for their four-match Super 14 tour of Australia and New Zealand.
The decision to arrive in Perth wearing Bafana Bafana jerseys could be a ploy that will work in favour of the Bulls as the ailing Western Force outfit might just fancy their chances of winning without being mindful that they are playing the reigning Super 14 champions and current unbeaten log leaders in this year’s competition.
However, Matfield was quick to assure the media and management that had gathered at Loftus yesterday that his team wanted to show support for their soccer compatriots and also lend their support to the entire World Cup in June.
“From the players’ side we really felt that we wanted to back Bafana Bafana. We think it is going to be a great event and we also back South Africa and we have shown what we can do with events we have hosted in the past. It is going to be a great, again. Just from the Bulls players we really want to ask the whole country to get behind Bafana Bafana and let’s make this a great World Cup,” said Matfield.
Loftus will host six World Cup matches. “It is the duty of every South African to get behind Bafana Bafana and as much as we criticise we have to look at the positive side,” said National Press Club chairman Yusuf Abramjee, who jointly hosted the press briefing with the Bulls.
