Winner of the category AFROS PEPITES
Mounawar –Réunion Island – Fusion of Indian Ocean (M’godro, Afro Beat, Funk . . . )

Mounawar

MOUNAWAR – A very pleasant energy, a seducing voice, full of emotions. A music freshness, culturally very rich (Indian Afro Rhythms, Melodies from Anjouan…) To be discovered!

Mounawar is born in Anjouan in the Comoros Islands: the Moon Islands; his father is from Anjouan Comoros and his mother from Madagascan Ajouan.

His music represents the Indian Ocean with his ternary rhythm « M’godro ». As an author, composer and singer, he finds his influences in the Indian Ocean Afro, Funk, Afro beat… Thanks to his lyrics he shares with us messages denouncing the political wanderings of his country and the unfairness that his people live on a daily basis because of politics…

In 2007, Mounawar receives the Price “Musique de l’Océan Indien”.

In 20008, he is invited at the Découvertes du Printemps de Bourges (France).

In 2011 his first album will be issued.

The lyrics of this album will be written and sang in his native language, Comoros, coming from Swaheli ; it gives him the possibility to communicate with all the people in Eastern Africa, from the South of Somalia to Mozambique.

Mounawar talks today to Men and Women, talks about their pain, their behaviours, typically human beings who always want to get more, who think “and what if…”.

His message of peace is universal today.

Musically, Mounawar was always very curious and very open to all the musics of the world. Besides m’godro and twarab which accompanied his childhood, the radio gave him the opportunity to discover Fela Kuti, Keziah Jones, Ben Harper or Jack Johnson.

Together with Jeremy Lapra and Didier Dijoux he reached his goal. A real ability to listen is the link between these three musicians who share music on stage in a very friendly way. And they share these moments with the public.

ETH – France – Ethio ethno groove

Eth

Eth, groove, hypnotic and sophisticated pulse, electrical and spicy rhythms… coming from Ethiopian dirges and rhythms from the world…

Eth draws its inspiration from Ethiopian dirges and from rhythms of the world.

Fed with urban music of Addis Abeba in 1970s but also from Indian dub and ragas, funk, rock and of course Nigerian Afro-beat, the 5 musicians of the band were also attracted by Guembri Gnawa, the Tuareg blues and the Javanese Gamelan.

Eth composes its repertoire of trance and dance by plaiting bridges of monkeys between Abyssinia and Indonesia, by inviting the Queen of Saba to dance twist and by brining a bit of sand from Sahara to Rio de Janeiro.

Carried by a band in between a jazz quintet and power combo rock, the compositions of Eth are based mostly on groove, hypnotic and sophisticated pulses, electric and spicy rhythms… Animal incantations mixed with brass instruments miaowing.
